Voluntary Exile - Who are they?

With roots going back to around 1991, the first inception of this band started essentially as a Rolling Stones cover band that also played The Who, Beatles, Elvis and other songs that they could easily learn. The founding members, Jeff Asselbergs on guitar and Jason Rawn on vocals, were only 18 years old and hailed from Orangeville Ontario, Canada. They started to acquire like minded musicians along the way and got tighter and tighter. They started playing shows with more established local bands around the Toronto area and began winning almost every battle of the bands that they entered. This was all the while still being in high school and sometimes unable to play shows in bars because they were not quite old enough to be admitted. After high school, the band came to an abrupt stop as we all went to college and started to drift apart. Jeff and Jason lost touch for a time as they both ended up living and working almost half a world away from each until a chance Facebook meeting in 2009. Realizing that they were both now living in the same city and only a short trip away, they went back into the band with a vengeance. They began recording covers of their favorite bands at the time, including The Stooges, MC5, and pretty much every Rolling Stones song they could remember until Jeff showed Jason a new riff he was working on. Jason wrote lyrics for the song, and just like that, became 100% committed to reviving Voluntary Exile for the whole world to enjoy. Jeff and Jason continue to write songs to this day. The first single release includes the tracks Mow Your Grass and 70 Car Pile Ups, both of which are blistering and unlike any other rock band. The riffs are sonic and the lyrics are both focused and honest. Check them out. Truly a one of a kind Rock and Roll band!
